Abstract

Orange-fleshed sweetpotato (OFSP) vine multiplication in Hindi village, Bahi District, Dodoma Region, Tanzania, demonstrates the potential of irrigation and farmer training to support agricultural production in semi-arid environments. Despite limited rainfall, committed OFSP growers utilize water from wells supported by the high water table associated with nearby Lake Manyara to sustain productive vine multiplication fields. This initiative highlights the role of capacity building in strengthening farmers’ technical skills and promoting sustainable sweetpotato production. In December 2015, Julius Kayongola, a farmer from Hindi village, participated in an OFSP seed production and multiplication training course organized by the Sugar Research Institute (SRI-Kibaha), Tanzania, with funding from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). His experience illustrates how targeted training, access to irrigation water, and farmer commitment can contribute to the development of OFSP vine multiplication and root production in semi-arid areas. The experience offers valuable insights for agricultural extension services, researchers, and development practitioners seeking to improve the availability of quality planting materials and strengthen climate-resilient food production systems.
